Planning Your Return Trip
Weather can significantly impact travel duration and normal departure times. The one-way water taxi journey across the lake takes approximately 45 minutes in favorable conditions, followed by an additional 15–20 minutes by shuttle from the boat departure point to the airport.
If you have an afternoon flight, we recommend scheduling your return water taxi at least four hours before your flight’s scheduled departure. For example, if you are booked on the 5:59 PM Alaska Airlines flight, we recommend booking the 2:00 PM water taxi return to provide the best possible assurance of arriving at the airport on time.
Please note that travel times can vary due to weather and lake conditions. Katmai Water Taxi is not responsible for missed flights resulting from weather delays, cancellations, or other unforeseen operational disruptions.
Katmai Water Taxi Shuttle Pick up and Drop Off
Our shuttle service will pick you up from one of our approved pickup locations, selected during the booking process, and transport you to Lake Camp, where you will board the water taxi.
Please be at your designated pickup location 40 minutes before your scheduled water taxi departure time. For example, if your water taxi is scheduled to depart at 7:00 AM, you will need to be ready for pickup at 6:20 AM. Shuttles will arrive for pickup between 20 and 40 minutes prior to your scheduled water taxi departure time depending on the number of prior pickups.
When you return from Brooks Camp to King Salmon, a shuttle will be waiting for you at Lake Camp. Upon arrival, simply let your shuttle driver know your preferred drop-off location in King Salmon, and they will take you there.
Weather & How It Affects
Katmai Water Taxi Operations
Weather conditions play a significant role in our ability to operate safely and on schedule. When evaluating conditions on the lake, we consider two primary factors: wind speed and wind direction.
Katmai Water Taxi operates on Naknek Lake, the largest lake located entirely within a U.S. national park. Because of its size and exposure, strong or unfavorable winds can create significant swells and rough water conditions more comparable to what you might experience on the ocean than on a typical inland lake.
Wind direction is especially important. Certain wind directions, including easterly winds, can build larger swells across the length of the lake and create challenging operating conditions. As a result, there may be days when we are unable to operate safely despite lower wind speeds than on other days when conditions allow us to travel.
Our goal is always to provide transportation as safely, reliably, and efficiently as possible. Our team closely monitors weather forecasts and changing conditions to make informed operational decisions. However, weather in Southwest Alaska can change quickly, sometimes giving us very little advance notice.
